How to Improve Badminton Footwork for Faster Movement and Better Court Coverage

Reaching the shuttle early gives you more time and more options. Footwork is how you get there.

Ready position

Return to the center of the court after each shot, knees slightly bent and weight on the balls of your feet.

Drills

  • Shadow footwork: move to each corner without a shuttle, then back to the center.
  • Split step: a small hop as your opponent hits, so you can push off in any direction.
  • Lunges to the net: practice a controlled lunge and a quick recovery.

Shoes

Court shoes with a gum rubber sole grip indoor floors and support side-to-side movement.
